biography What does an orphan want most in this world? If you were to pose this question to Davina Torres, she would laugh in your face and keep it moving. For her, it is a lot easier now ignoring the past and what she endured at a child, but if you were to ask the eight year old version of herself, she would say she just wanted to feel a sense of belonging. At the young age of three, Davina Torres and four older siblings were taken from their mother and made wards of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Natalia Torres struggled as a single mother who eventually had her fill of failures and abandonment that by the time Davina was born she had all but checked out. The children did what why could to take care of one another and the only parent that they had, but a month shy of Davina’s fourth birthday, Child Protection Services were involved and the siblings were all split up.

CPS did the best they could to market Dahlia to young parents looking to adopt, and in most cases, she would have been the ideal candidate for adoption when it came to appearance and age. However, demeanor was also quite important and every year that passed, Davina got more restless, more combative. There were flashes and glimpses of faces of people she no longer new but loved, and it made Davina so angry and withdrawn that adoption no longer seemed like a viable future for the young girl. So, she would be cycled through private and group homes under the care of foster parents who enjoyed the benefits and steady check more so than actually nurturing the children. Davina did the best she could to endure her circumstances by keeping her head low and only defending herself when provoked. A steely resolve emerged, wanting to prove to all those who thought so little of her and what she could accomplish with her future.

When Davina turned eighteen, she was granted her freedom to pursue a new life. She bought herself a pack of cigarettes and proceeded to the local library to work on her FASFA forms. While Davina didn’t consider herself a brain by any sense of the word, she knew and loved her art. Photography was her passion and she would get accepted to New York University to major in the discipline. There was nothing glamorous about the drastic move. Davina held unsavory jobs to pay for bills and books and found it hard to connect with many of her well-connected peers. What she wasn’t expecting was to find that someone, Harry Loewe, whom was from old money in Weschester, New York and a pledge at a fraternity. Daina joked their romance was corny and straight out of a romcom, and perhaps it was all true. What she did know was that life got better with Harry, and the moment she was finding her own space and happiness in New York, it was all ripped from her.

Six months before graduating from NYU, Harry died protecting Davina from an assailant trying to mug them after leaving a friend’s party. So devastated and guilty from the whole ordeal, she would leave New York upon getting her degree and traded new scenery at Bosto. For as disgusting as it sounded in her head, Davina thought she would be waiting on word of which medical school Harry would attend so that she could pathetically follow after. The two were supposed to move in together and have their happy ending, but now Davina was moving into a cramped one bedroom apartment in a crappy neighborhood of Los Angeles. With no friends and little motivation, Davina paid the rent doing freelance photography and posting her creative work on Instagram. While the endeavor skyrocketed, Davina’s mental space was no where near where her career was going.

By some crazy chance, she would finally find something to help snap her out of her haze. Davina began mentoring at-risk girls who struggled with self-esteem and bullying. It was practically therapeautic, supporting and uplifting girls who mirrored herself in so many ways. Volunteering forced Davina to confront some nasty truths about herself and self-destructive tendencies that were often curate solely to spoil happiness. Now? Davina isn’t so quick to run from something good and stable. Scary enough, she’s more willing to accept it.
